Less than two years after the devastating floods of January 2011 communities in the Batticaloa, Amparai, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts have been hit with severe flooding due to heavy rains and the opening of reservoirs. Communities who are still struggling with rebuilding their lives after the war have again faced disaster.
Dr. Darshan Ambalavanar, Baticola project manager with The Church of the American Ceylon Mission (CACM) said “the flooding has wrecked fields that would have provided a harvest and income in the new year”. The Church of the American Ceylon Mission (CACM) have set up Flood Relief and Rehabilitation Fund to provide emergency aid for the families affected to help them through this hardship and restart their lives. They will provide immediate food and also ongoing nutritional support for children who’s parents have lost their livelihoods.
The relief pack that they will provide will cost Rs.4,285 per family (£20.70 or $34 – View Flood Relief Budget) and have requests for assistance for several thousand families and children. A monthly nutrition feeding program at a small centre for 30 children is approximately £246/$400 a month.
